Coatlicue, whose name means 'Lady of the Serpent Skirt', is one of the primordial Aztec deities, Earth mother goddess embodying the duality of creation and destruction. Mother of Huitzilopochtli, the Sun god, and the Centzon Huitznahua, the 400 star gods, her miraculous pregnancy led to a family rebellion that ended in her decapitation, only to be reborn stronger. Her iconic statue in Mexico's National Museum of Anthropology shows her with a serpent skirt, feline claws, pendulous milk-dripping breasts, and a necklace of hearts, symbolizing devouring fertility, life-death cycle, and primordial telluric forces.
