Mythical Origins of Amphitrite
Amphitrite emerges in Hesiod's Theogony as one of the fifty Nereids, daughters of the Old Man of the Sea Nereus and the Oceanid Doris. According to variants collected by Apollodorus, some traditions consider her an Oceanid. She personifies the serene and stable sea, opposed to the storms of her husband Poseidon. Her genealogy directly links her to the primordial waters and to the generation of marine creatures.
Wife of Poseidon and Mother of Triton
Poseidon courted her insistently; when Amphitrite fled, a dolphin persuaded her to return and for this reason was raised to the sky as a constellation. From their union Triton is born, messenger of the depths with the form of a man-fish. Amphitrite rules alongside her husband the marine domains, maintaining the balance between calm and agitated waters.
Symbolism and Marine Attributes
Her main emblems are the fishing net, the dolphin and crab claws. The net represents dominion over the waters and the capture of marine souls. The dolphin recalls her return to Poseidon's side. The claws symbolize the power to hold and protect the underwater realms. In ancient art she appears crowned with seaweed and accompanied by tritons and nereids.
The marine court and the realm of Amphitrite
As queen consort of Poseidon, Amphitrite shares the rule of the sea and all that dwells in it: seals and dolphins, fish and abyssal monsters obey the sovereign pair. Art depicts her riding the waves in a chariot drawn by hippocamps or tritons, surrounded by her Nereid sisters and crowned with crab claws, her hair bound by a net. A personification of the sea in its gentle face, she was invoked to still tempests and grant safe crossings, in contrast to Poseidon's wrath. From her union with the god were born, besides Triton, the lesser goddesses Rhode and Benthesikyme. The Romans identified her with SALACIA, the wife of Neptune who personified the salt water and the depths, so that the Greek queen of the calm sea found her Italic reflection in the consort of the Latin sovereign of the waters. Her figure, discreet before her husband's impetus, embodies the stability of the marine element: the serene surface beneath which beats the immeasurable force of the ocean.

Greek mythology developed in Ancient Greece from the Late Bronze Age and reached its most elaborate form during the archaic and classical periods, between the 8th and 4th centuries BCE. This tradition exerted a lasting influence on the literature, art and thought of Rome, the European Renaissance and subsequent Western culture, supplying motifs, characters and narrative structures that have endured in philosophy, astronomy and the arts to the present day.
